I woke up horny this morning and since my wife is out of town on business, I was left to my own "devices"... both literally and figuratively. Personally I enjoy using sex toys with her and sometimes I like using a few by myself, and today just happened to be one of those days. I'll spare you the details but I will say that this morning got me thinking. Some of these little gadgets are fantastic and the fact that they have been dirty little secrets for so many people for so long is truly unfortunate. What's nice though is over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in open and candid conversations about the use of sex toys. Mainstream media including the Today Show, Men’s Health, GQ, Cosmopolitan, CNBC.com, NY Post, Harper’s Bazaar, The Huffington Post and many more have featured reviews of many adult products and I think it’s fantastic.
Research firm The Hewson Group predicts that sales of sex toys will equal that of smart phones, within the next ten years, attributing mainstream acceptance as a driving factor. Could we really be approaching the day when buying a vibrator will be as common and matter-of-fact as picking up a new electric toothbrush? I doubt it will go that far but I've been wrong before. (To put that prediction into perspective, in 2014 Apple alone averaged over 800,000 iPhones sold per day. If sex toy sales can match that volume, I'm getting into the dildo business tomorrow.)
Even back in 2009, I remember hearing about Oprah doing a special episode on sex and a doctor/sex therapist recommending the use of vibrators with your partner during sex, stating that vibrator stimulates better sexual function, including arousal, desire, and orgasm for women. According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 53% of American Woman aged 18-60 have used a vibrator, 78% of which with a partner.
It's funny but looking back, we have actually had three separate friends on three separate occasions, buy us sex toys as gifts (one of which died due to over use and two that we still enjoy to this day.) How great is that. It wasn't weird and it wasn't kinky. It was just cool.
So as I mentioned earlier, I think it's great that people are starting to come out of their shell and not only use different toys but also talk about their experiences. Personally I always enjoy a good recommendation so if you have a favorite toy, please share your recommendation with me.
